The Voyage of “Somethin’ Different” to Key West

Thursday, Oct 4:  Lee, Bill and Bob (Sherwood) departed from the Catskill Creek at 9:15 only to return to the club dock to make minor mechanical adjustments. After accomplishing the task they traveled the creek to the river to discover fog and were forced to anchor until 11:15 am when they finally got underway. The fog was very thick and it took them longer than expected to get to Liberty Landing. They called ahead to make arrangements for evening dockage on the Jersey Shore but found out the marina they expected to stay overnight at was closed. They phoned Jim Davis in the Highlands who made arrangements with a friend at a local marina in Highland, NJ.  They arrived there at 6PM, covering approximately 105 miles.

Friday, Oct 5: Leaving the Marina at 8:15AM their first stop was Cape May at 2PM for fuel. They proceeded through the Delaware Bay, to the C&D Canal. The day ended at the Chesapeake Inn & Marina at approximately 5:15PM. Total distance covered was 215 miles.

Saturday, Oct 6: Leaving at 7:30AM today they continued on the C&D Canal. Upon entering the upper Chesapeake Bay they were hit by 5 foot seas. At 9:30AM after going 20 miles they stopped at Great Oaks Marina because of rough seas. Things calmed down about noon and they headed out into 2 foot seas, traveling at about 23 knots. They proceeded another 60 miles stopping around 5PM at Soloman’s Yacht Center on Soloman Island. They will probably stay for the day tomorrow at the same Marina due to a cold front approaching. Everyone sounds upbeat and pleased with the progress.

Monday, Oct 8: Left Solomon’s Yacht Center approximately 8 AM, hit 3 to 4 foot rough seas. Contemplating turning around, they were able to find a good speed of about 20 knots, but still got pounded pretty well. Reached Ocean Marine Yacht Center around 1 PM in Portsmouth VA where they are docking for the night. This also is where CYC member Uwe Hestnar docks “The Duck” for the winter. Total travel distance was 100 miles and are close to where they expected to be at this point in the trip and the boat is performing well.
